World’s First Semi-Submersible Floating Offshore Wind Farm Smashes Predictions.

The floating offshore wind farm, which was connected to the grid before 2019’s end and fully operational in 2020, was developed by the Windplus consortium. This consortium comprises Ocean Winds, a joint venture equally owned by EDPR and ENGIE, along with Repsol and Principle Power.

This groundbreaking project features three platforms, each supporting a single 8.4-MW Vestas turbine. These platforms are securely anchored to the seabed using chains and are linked to the onshore substation in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, via a 20-kilometer cable.

In 2023, despite facing the challenges of Storm Ciaran, with waves reaching a staggering height of 20 meters and wind gusts clocking in at up to 139 kilometers per hour, the 25 MW WindFloat Atlantic not only persevered, but set new records.

These extreme conditions surpassed previous project records, underscoring the resilience and reliability of the floating technology, even in the most adverse offshore environments.

A press release from the project’s owners and operators emphasized that with three years of successful operation, it is clear that floating technology has reached maturity and can be relied upon, even in the most challenging offshore conditions. This, they believe, opens up significant offshore wind opportunities worldwide.
