Prysmian completes inter-array cable system offshore France

Prysmian has successfully completed the commissioning of the inter-array cable system for the Fécamp offshore wind farm situated in the English Channel, approximately 24 kilometres off the French coast in Normandy.

The Fécamp offshore wind farm consists of 71 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines, boasting a cumulative capacity of nearly 500 MW. This substantial capacity enables the generation of clean electricity, fulfilling the energy requirements of more than 770,000 people.

Prysmian had secured this project in 2020 with a contract awarded by EDF Renewables and its partners

”This important project marks a further significant milestone for the Group, being one of the first large-scale offshore wind farms located in France, in which the Group has full EPCI responsibility for the inter-array supply and installation contract,” said Alberto Boffelli, Chief Operating Officer Projects BU, Prysmian Group.”As a one-stop-shop service provider, Prysmian was responsible for the design, manufacture, installation, burial, termination and testing of a total of 118 km of 33 kV submarine cables with 630mm2 cross-sections and both aluminium and copper cores to connect the 71 wind turbines with a capacity of 7 MW each to the offshore substation. Prysmian also offered its strategic expertise and extended ability to provide a complex and complete installation solution, whilst ensuring a tighter control over the entire supply chain.”

The offshore installation was executed under the comprehensive and dedicated project management of Prysmian. EDF Renewables and its partners have assigned additional projects to Prysmian, including those related to the Saint-Nazaire and Calvados offshore wind farms in France.

The development of Fécamp is a collaborative effort involving Eolien Maritime France (EMF), a joint venture comprising EDF Renouvelables, EIH S.à.rl (owned by Enbridge Inc. and CPP Investments), and Skyborn Renewables (formerly wpd offshore). Installation of the first wind turbine at the site took place in July of this year. Concurrently, the offshore wind farm, boasting a total capacity of 500 MW, commenced its power generation in the same month

Installation of the first wind turbine at the site took place in July of this year. Concurrently, the offshore wind farm, boasting a total capacity of 500 MW, commenced its power generation in the same month. The wind farm will contribute to achieving France’s objective of 40 per cent of electricity production from renewable sources by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

Overall, the three-year project mobilizes 2,000 people in the Normandy region at peak times, including over 1,200 at the gravity foundations site and up to 1,000 at the Siemens Gamesa factory in Le Havre for the production of blades and nacelles. The construction of the electrical substation, led by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, involves more than 450 people in Saint-Nazaire.

Fécamp is the third commercial-scale wind project offshoreFrancetoreach the turbine installation phase, following the now-inaugurated Saint-Nazaire, and the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm.
