OCEAN CENSUS LAUNCHES FLAGSHIP EXPEDITION TO TENERIFE

As representatives from across the globe gather at the Conference of the Parties (COP), a parallel initiative spearheaded by scientists affiliated with The Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census Project and Spanish research institutions is set to embark on a pivotal 21-day expedition to investigate the depths off the shores of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Taking place from November 27th to December 17th, 2023, the Flagship Expedition unites a consortium of international experts with the urgent mission to systematically document newly discovered marine species facing the threat of extinction as a crucial component of the Ocean Census initiative.

The Macaronesia – Tenerife Submersible & Diver Expedition is the result of a collaboration involving the Jesús Ortea Research Group, Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Tenerife (MUNA), Universidad de La Laguna (ECOMAR), and Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO). This expedition focuses on the Macaronesia, a biogeographical region in the eastern-central Atlantic extending from the Azores to the Canary Islands. This area presents an exceptional opportunity for scientific exploration and discovery owing to its diverse marine ecosystem.

The Pisces VI submersible, along with the Finnish Scientific Dive Academy, will investigate the Radazul region and Tenerife’s volcanic coastline, respectively. Their objective is to document biodiversity and uncover new species. The expedition’s scientific impact will be further enriched by a workshop on species discovery, which will include prominent experts from the Ocean Census Science Network.

Supported by Ocean Census’s foundational partners, The Nippon Foundation and Nekton Foundation, this mission tackles the pressing issue of biodiversity loss. With an estimated 1-2 million species inhabiting our oceans, and 75-90% of them yet to be discovered, the expedition’s significance cannot be overstated.

Leopoldo Moro, Co-Lead Scientist of the Expedition and taxonomist with the Jesús Ortea Research Group, underscores the significance of initiatives such as Ocean Census in advancing the knowledge crucial for the development and implementation of sustainable marine policies.

The mission’s narrative will be conveyed through captivating visuals and narratives, serving as a bridge between scientific research and public advocacy. Regular social media updates, live educational broadcasts, and complimentary resources for schools and students will guarantee global engagement and awareness of this vital expedition.
