Germany greenlights DolWin4, Amprion’s first offshore grid connection
The DolWin4 offshore grid connection in Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the North Sea has received a planning approval decision from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
The Fécamp offshore wind farm consists of 71 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines, boasting a cumulative capacity of nearly 500 MW. This substantial capacity enables the generation of clean electricity, fulfilling the energy requirements of more than 770,000 people.
Scheduled for operation in 2028, DolWin4, the inaugural offshore grid connection system by German transmission system operator (TSO) Amprion Offshore, will link three offshore wind farms to the German grid.
In 2021, Amprion submitted the application documents for two offshore grids, namely DolWin4 and BorWin4. In 2022, the planning approval process for DolWin4 was initiated by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), and the process for BorWin4 began at the start of this year.
While the planning approval decision for DolWin4 has been issued, Amprion has not yet obtained the final building permit. The company must undergo a multi-stage approval process by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) before receiving the building permit. Furthermore, Amprion is required to consider the additional provisions outlined in the planning approval decision during the technical implementation and provide the necessary evidence.
The application submitted to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) for DolWin4 pertains to the DolWin delta converter platform and the approximately 26-kilometre-long submarine cable system. Amprion has already chosen the suppliers for these components.
Siemens Energy and Dragados Offshore were chosen by the German transmission system operator (TSO) Amprion to supply the converter platform, while Prysmian secured the contract for delivering the submarine cables for DolWin4. These same suppliers have also been selected for the BorWin4 grid connection.

In July 2022, Amprion initiated onshore construction activities for the DolWin4 and BorWin4 offshore grid connections at Norderney Island’s North Beach.
The DolWin4 and BorWin4 projects will collectively possess a connection capacity of 1.8 GW.
Amprion is additionally advancing the development of the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connections, each designed to transmit 2 GW. These projects are expected to become operational in 2029 and 2030, respectively.
