Europe’s First Commercial-Scale Floating Offshore Wind Farm Secures All Planning Approvals
Upon completion, the Green Volt project will consist of approximately 35 offshore wind turbines floating on the water, generating around 560 MW of renewable energy.
Selected through Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing round, the initiative aims to supply renewable electricity to oil and gas platforms, replacing current power sources like natural gas and diesel. Additionally, Green Volt will contribute electricity to the UK grid.
Owned jointly by Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, the project anticipates reducing carbon emissions by about 1 million tonnes annually.
First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf expressed enthusiasm about the project’s approval, highlighting its significance in advancing floating wind technology and Scotland’s position in renewable energy.
The commitment to making Scotland a global leader in offshore wind is underscored by substantial investments and robust consents issued for various renewable energy projects. Notably, Green Volt received consent just over a year after securing exclusivity rights for seabed usage, showcasing the dedication of all involved parties.
Expected to commence power generation in 2029, Green Volt represents Europe’s first large-scale floating wind endeavor and serves as a crucial advancement in renewable energy, paving the way for future gigawatt-scale projects and fostering expertise and job growth in Scotland.
